Background of the Study
Maternal healthcare accessibility is a critical determinant of maternal and neonatal health outcomes. In Kogi State, disparities in healthcare access have profound implications for pregnant women, particularly in rural areas where healthcare infrastructure is limited. Maternal healthcare encompasses antenatal, delivery, and postnatal services that are essential for preventing complications and ensuring the well-being of both mother and child. However, in Kogi State, factors such as long travel distances, inadequate transportation, and insufficient healthcare facilities hinder access to timely and quality maternal care (Ibrahim, 2023; Suleiman, 2024). Socioeconomic challenges and cultural barriers further contribute to delays in seeking care, which can result in preventable complications during pregnancy and childbirth. The state has implemented various interventions, including community health outreach and subsidized maternal services, but gaps persist that undermine these efforts. Understanding the multifaceted challenges in maternal healthcare accessibility is crucial for developing targeted strategies that improve service delivery and health outcomes for mothers and infants in Kogi State.
Statement of the Problem
In Kogi State, maternal healthcare accessibility remains a significant challenge, particularly for women in remote and underserved communities. Long travel distances, limited transportation options, and inadequate health facilities prevent many expectant mothers from receiving timely antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. This lack of access contributes to high maternal and infant mortality rates and increases the risk of complications during childbirth (Okafor, 2023). Socio-cultural factors, such as traditional beliefs and gender norms, further impede women’s ability to seek care, while economic constraints make it difficult for many to afford services even when available. Despite government and NGO efforts to improve maternal healthcare, the persistent barriers indicate a need for a comprehensive evaluation of current accessibility issues. Addressing these challenges is essential to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in Kogi State, thereby improving overall public health outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the accessibility of maternal healthcare services in Kogi State.
2. To identify the barriers—geographical, economic, and cultural—that limit maternal healthcare access.
3. To recommend strategies to enhance the availability and utilization of maternal health services.
Research Questions
1. What is the current level of accessibility to maternal healthcare services in Kogi State?
2. What are the primary barriers to accessing maternal healthcare in the region?
3. What interventions can improve maternal healthcare accessibility and utilization?
Research Hypotheses
1. Longer travel distances are significantly associated with lower maternal healthcare utilization.
2. Economic constraints and cultural factors are major predictors of inadequate maternal care access.
3. Improved transportation and community outreach programs will significantly enhance maternal healthcare access.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on maternal healthcare services in selected rural and urban areas of Kogi State. Data will be collected via surveys, interviews with healthcare providers, and analysis of maternal health records. Limitations include potential selection bias and variability in service quality across different regions.
